There’s a First Time for Everything: Black History in Fashion

Where are all of our history buff Fashomistas? Fashion history is our favorite subject! The months of February is Black History Month, and what better way is there to celebrate than by sharing some of the innumerable accomplished black women involved in fashion. The originals, the trailblazers, the pioneers, the firsts! There’s a first time for everything!

Elizabeth Keckley was born a slave in Virginia. She was a seamstress, civil rights activist, and author. Her dressmaking skills were her ticket out of slavery. She made enough in order to free not only herself but her son as well. She made her way to Washington and wound up being the personal modiste and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s wife. Some of the dresses she made are currently featured at the Smithsonian Museum of American History!

Ann Lowe was from Alabama, and the first African-American to become a noted international fashion designer. She was known for designing dignitaries’ wives dresses. She is responsible for the infamous Jackie O wedding dress. Her work is currently featured in the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture!

Dorthea Church was from Texarkana, Texas. She took her claim to fame in the 50s when she hired by Christian Dior. She became the first black model on the runways of Paris and was the first black model to have a successful career in Paris at that time, period!

Donyale Luna’s beauty and grace were compared to that of the great Queen Nefertiti. She is credited with being the first black supermodel as well as the first black model to cover British Vogue (1966).

Naomi Sims was the first black woman to cover Ladies’ Home Journal (1968). She also went on to design wigs and a cosmetic collection for black women.

Beverly Johnson was the first black woman to cover American Vogue (1974) as well as French Elle (1975). She went on to cover more than 500 magazines in her career.

Grace Jones was born in Jamaica. She moved to New York with her family as a child, and she eventually started her modeling career there. She later moved to Paris to continue pursuing her career. She is known for making the androgynous look famous and appealing in the 80s. Not only is she a supermodel, but she is also a singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress.

Naomi Campbell was the first black model to cover Time Magazine (1991) as well as French and Russian Vogue (1988, 2000). She is one of the five models known as the Original Supermodels or the Big Five, a term coined from their 1990 British Vogue cover. Photographer Steven Meisel referred to Campbell as one of the three models in the Trinity.

Lana Ogilvie is a Canadian model and was the first woman of color to be signed by Cover Girl Cosmetics (1992).

Tyra Banks was the first African-American woman to cover GQ (1996), Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Issue (1996), as well as the Victoria’s Secret Catalog (1997). She has known for her shows America’s Next Top Model and Tyra (Talk Show.) She now has her own cosmetics line, Tyra Beauty. She is also a producer, television personality, actress, author, and singer.

Liya Kebede was the first black woman to sign with and become the face of Estee Lauder.

The Power of Pants (A Grammy’s Tale)

on February 1, 2018

Did any of our Fashomistas catch the Grammys?! There was a lot controversy, a lot of talent, a lot to celebrate, but most importantly there was a lot of fashion and personal style! We love gorgeous evening gown, but there is just something powerful about a pants suit! There were several women on the red carpet this year that ditched the traditional dress routine and decided to embrace the powerful statement that pants or the lack thereof make!

Some of my favorite looks of the night included Eve, Anna Kendrick, Cyndi Lauper, Rapsody, Ava Max, Alessia Cara, Andra Day, Janelle Monae, Sibley Scoles and Erin Lim. Most of these women hail from the music world so it stands to reason that they would march to the beat of their own drum with their personal style! The fashion statements ladies made ranged from neutral to monochrome to patterns.

Now maybe you’re thinking, “Yes these looks are nice, but how do I bring these looks to life in my everyday life?” Fashom is here to help you with that. Here are some great trends and tips that you can follow in your everyday life whether you are a corporate woman, a fashionista, or a stay at home mom.

  1. Keep it neutral. You can’t go wrong with a neutral color. Neutrals are the backbone of every woman’s wardrobe. Take it from Alessia Cara. She looks like quite the casual chic chick in her Chucks and Chinos. If you’re a corporate woman you may want to keep it neutral, but don’t let it take away your style like Alessia.
  2. Ditch the pants. If you’re a stay at home mom you might like this next one. Check out Andra Day and Erin Lim. The suit jacket is there and we are loving it, but where are their pants?! Suit jackets as dresses! Talk about a life hack! Rushing to get ready for your date with the hubby? Forget the pants because you’re going to be styling and profiling tonight!

  1. 3. Monochrome head to toe. This was the style in the early 2000s, and it’s been making its way back for the last couple of years. Rapsody and Sibley Scoles did it right. They are in colors that fit their complexions, and they are popping! This style could work for the corporate woman, the fashionista, as well as the stay at home mom!

4. Patterns, patterns, and you guessed it more patterns! Eve, Anna Kendrick, Ava Max, Cyndi Lauper, and Janelle Monae all rocked different patterns on their pants and rocked it oh so well! If you are a fashionista and want to make a statement, then this is the look for you!

Not so traditional? Love to make a statement? You may find the power in pants! Need help finding a style that’s right for you? Download Fashom App, and check out our new stylist feature! Our stylists will personally style you and have the pieces sent to your doorstep!

Now that’s powerful!

Springing into Trends

on January 19, 2018

Fashomistas, we are more than halfway through January now! Time is flying by. Spring will be here before you know it, which is great because I’m ready to shed my black and white minimalist palette for some Spring colors, especially pastels. The official first day of Spring starts on the Spring Equinox, March 20th. So, we need to start stocking up and shopping for it now before the time is here ladies because the time is already near.

This Spring is coming fast Fashomistas, and here are what colors you can expect to see trending in this upcoming season! There will be blues, purples, reds, browns, yellows, greens, pinks, and greys. Pastels are coming in season again ladies, and I can’t wait! I am here for the blues, purples, and pinks for sure. Some of you may be wondering why there are browns and greys listed as a part of the Spring Color Palette. The reason for this is because with all of these beautiful bright and bold spring colors sometimes you need a neutral to mellow it out and to make it fashion. I am all for color blocking, but if you try every color under the sun you’ll end up looking like a rainbow. In fashion, that’s usually never a good thing.

Here are some Fashom outfits I personally styled for some different Spring occasions.

First up, I utilized the colors listed as “taffy”, “yolk”, and “soft grey.” Taffy is a lilac tint that belongs to the purple family and yolk is a yellow shade. If you know anything about color theory, purple and yellow are known as complementary colors because of they… Yes, you guessed it… because they complement each other. Spring is still “sweater weather.” However, it can be a bit warmer with a cool breeze. I paired this sweater and cardigan with a cute denim skirt for a nice Spring date. Don’t forget this cute little daisy bag with that small, but a saturated pop of color in it. The soft grey acts as a neutral even though the taffy is relatively muted.

Taffy, Yolk, & Soft Grey

Second, I have an outfit that utilizes the colors listed as “rose water” and “rubber sole.” These colors go together so fittingly. A nice pastel pink blouse paired with a suede mini skirt and leather booties. This could be a cute working outfit depending on your job. If you can’t wear it to work, then you could always wear it to the movies or the mall!

Rose Water & Rubber Sole

Up next is a simple, casual day outfit with the use of the colors listed as “catalyst” and “woke.” Every woman needs a good dark wash denim; it is a staple in every wardrobe no matter the style for sure. These dark jeans go great with the breezy and dreamy green blouse with its simple string bow tie. The matching bag and neutral flats complete this look. This is a nice daytime, nowhere really to go, but still, want to be a cute outfit.

Catalyst & Woke

Last but certainly not least, is the outfit that pictures the colors listed as “baby blue” and “iD.” My favorite pairing for Spring would have to be baby, light, or powder blue on light wash denim. It is a match made in Heaven! Here’s some more color theory for you. Because blue and purple are next to each other on the color wheel they are considered analogous colors. “iD” is listed as a red, but I would say it is more like the color, red-violet, which a very deep or rich hue consisting of red and purple which makes even more sense as to why this bag and these shoes look good with this blue sweatshirt; because blue and red literally make purple. Blue is already a part of red-violet. Enough book sense for you and back to the fashion sense. Who said comfy couldn’t be cute. Maybe it’s a little breezy this sweatshirt will keep you warm. My favorite parts of this outfit are the bows on the sweatshirt as well as on the pants. It makes this simple ensemble stylish and fun. This outfit is perfect for a walk in the park or anything that causes for you to be out in the Spring air.

Baby Blue & iD

If you like this Spring color palette and if these outfits seem to be just your style, then download the Fashom App (test.www.fashom.com) for more outfit inspiration. Check out our new stylist feature if you want to “spring” into these trends, but need some help finding what you need, want, and actually like.

Golden Globe MeToo Statement

on January 10, 2018

If you’re a Fashomista you already know that fashion says, “Me too!” (I like that too) whereas style says “Only me!” (Only I like this) Fashion makes a statement before you ever even open your mouth. The celebrities of the Golden Globes made both a fashion and political statement, by wearing all black everything to stand in solidarity bringing awareness to sexual harassment and assault in the Hollywood community and scene.

In October of 2017, the hashtag #MeToo went viral in the wake of allegations of sexual assault allegations against the infamous Harvey Weinstein. The hashtag was utilized in efforts to show just how rampant misogynistic behavior and tendencies are everywhere; it was meant to make everyone aware that sexual assault is a problem and can happen to anyone (women and even men too!) Celebrities shared their Hollywood horror stories of sexual misconduct and encouraged the everyday woman to share as well. Tarana Burke, a woman of color and civil rights activist, is the creator of the hashtag and wanted it to be a source of empathy for women who had been survivors of an assault. Alyssa Milano popularized the hashtag via Twitter when the Weinstein allegations first came to light. Oprah included in her Cecil B. de Mille Award acceptance speech that she wanted to honor the women that had endured years of abuse. Oprah’s speech moved the audience to many rounds of applause and a standing ovation. I’m sure it touched the hearts of little girls and women of color around the world.

Fashion again is a statement. Style is YOUR statement. Celebrities donned some decadent pieces at this year’s 75th annual Golden Globes. The red carpet seemed draped in black. Black is the new statement color. Black is the new black. Black says here I am. Black says strength. Black says unity. The celebrities of the Golden Globes made their fashion statement, but each individual made their statement with their own style. All kinds of trends were relevant for this red carpet scene: sheer, pantsuits, lace, princess gowns, sleek and simple, above the ankle/knee dresses, pops of color, sparkle, texture, and of course none other than statements.

Here are some outfits that we created from the inspiration the celebrities of the Golden Globes gave us here at Fashom.

Bare it all with sheer black, but keep it fun with a little sparkle in your heels and accessories.

Get your shine on and add a little pop of color to it too. If you want to be extra fab add a little fur and a statement heel.

Keep it sleek and simple with a pantsuit or jumpsuit and a single sole heel. Add a little bling to some balance.

Be edgy with this leather look. The fur heels add a little luxe to the look. Break up the monotony with a color blocked clutch.

If all black everything is just up your alley, and if you like to make a statement download the Fashom App (test.www.fashom.com) for more outfit inspo. Check out our new stylist feature if you want a style that makes YOUR statement.

Do You Remember The Time?

I can’t ever really remember a time when fashion wasn’t a part of my life. I grew up admiring my mother who always dressed with grace and elegance. When I was a little girl I remember playing and trying on her high heeled shoes. I was always so fascinated by her collection of shoes and clothes and I was in a hurry to grow up so that one day I could fit into those pieces. When I was in middle and high school fashion literally saved my self-esteem. I suffered from a skin condition, called vitiligo which leaves depigmented patches of skin on random areas of the body. The articles of clothing and accessories that I chose to wear helped to conceal the vitiligo and made me feel normal. These days my fashion choices of bold colors and strategic pattern clashing are all about making me stand out rather than fit in.

Falling Into Place

My career in styling started with the decision to go back to school with the specific purpose of earning a degree in Fashion Merchandising and from a natural knack of understanding how to coordinate pieces. Prior to making that decision, I felt lost and creatively drained working as a General Manager in the food industry. As soon as I went back to school everything seemed to fall into place: I met a professor who acted as a mentor to me and I was hired right after graduation at the place where I had been interning. All throughout, I was free to wear the outfits that I wanted to wear and to showcase my fashion style on Instagram – which is how I got Fashom’s attention.

Pay Attention! Fashion Trends Are All Around You!

I’m fortunate to live in Brooklyn and commute into the city. When you look up and pay attention to your surroundings the latest fashion trends are all around you! Of course, I am on Instagram all the time following street style stars like Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert, Anna Dello Russo, Vika Gazinskaya, Miroslava Duma, etc – the more outrageous the girl the better. Finally, I love the old school method of flipping through a fashion magazine. My favorites right now are Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar.

When You Feel Good You Look Good!

Making people feel good through the knowledge that they look good.

Fashion = Therapy

There’s a misconception that people who follow fashion are materialistic. I disagree. I’ve always believed that fashion styling – the process of looking put together – can be very therapeutic.

Fashom’s color, Color of the year

on December 31, 2017

Colors have meanings and they can make you feel a certain emotion and get a certain message from them. Take Orange, for example, people say that it represents envy, while yellow makes you feel happy. Red is the color of power while White is for peace. Pantone announced that purple especially the shade UltraViolet -that comes from the melding of blue and red- as the color of the year 2018.

PCI-coy-2018-logo

Pantone mentioned that the color has a spiritual meaning and a connection to the cosmo. Also, it is a symbolism for counterculture and unconventionality. Moreover, the color has a powerful relationship with many big movements related to women like suffrage movements and also LGBTQ rights. So It’s not only a beautiful color but also a very strong one that represent freedom and rights movements.

At Fashom we chose purple as our brand color too. We believe in the right of being different and being able to express it through your look and your body. We believe in diversity in beauty. That’s why purple is our color!!

Fashion knows NO age!

It’s hard to pinpoint an age when I first became fascinated with fashion. I think I’ve always loved it. I remember in early primary school I’d spend all my mornings before school drawing and designing clothing with a friend (None of which I actually made as I wasn’t really too keen on the actual sewing part). I did do well in home ec in high school but didn’t own a sewing machine until recently, so I’ve started to make a few simple things now that I own one. It’s only been in the last 6 years where fashion has really come to the forefront for me again though. I take great delight in coming up with unique pairings and finding one of a kind piece.

The Styling Start-Up.

I was feeling creatively suppressed at my day job and instead went to my daily outfits for my creative outlet, that’s when I decided to start my blog Style Within Grace (although it was called Faith Filled Femme at first). I wanted to share the outfits I was coming up with and help give advice and style those who had trouble themselves. I’ve been growing my blog for about 5 years now. Earlier this year I went to a become a stylish day-long workshop with the Australian Style Institute to see if it was something I wanted to pursue and I loved every minute of it. I wanted to sign up for their course right away but have been putting aside money all year long so I could take it and have finally signed up to do it February next year. I can’t wait.

Staying in the KNOW and ON TREND.

Styling Esteem!

I think in the end it’s not about the clothing it’s about the attitude and confidence the clothing can bring! The best thing about styling is seeing the renewed confidence in a client because she now feels like herself and she feels comfy in her own skin.

Style knows NO wrong!

You can’t be wrong when it comes to style, if you feel good in it, you look good in it!

NYE Trends Blog

on December 28, 2017

Season’s greetings, Fashomistas! It’s almost that time of year. The “New Year, New Me” time of year. Who cares about resolutions we don’t intend to keep anyway? If we do nothing else, let’s end this year and begin next year with style!

New Year’s Eve is a night for food and family or drinks and partying. There were so many trends this year even just in this one season for Winter. The following trends will have you shining brightly just like the New Year’s first fireworks: Leather, sparkle, fur, velvet, suede, satin, black and white, pop of color.

Fall and Winter are when the true fashionistas come out to play. It’s cold so we can wear more clothes and show off our style. Some of these trends are year-round like black and white or pop of color. For maximum style, factor tries pairing your favorite New Year’s Eve trends together.

Everyone brings in the New Year in their own way. We’ve put together some outfits for different outings on the holiday by combining some of this holiday’s trends.

Maybe you bring in the New Year at a party. If so, outfit one is a great option to strut your stuff!

nye blog 1

Shine bright with the sparkle trend and add some edge to the leather. Whoever said all leather had to be black and real? This silver moto jacket enhances the bright red dress. The white PU leather booties serve as a cool neutral. The outfit speaks for itself keep the jewelry simple and to a minimum. Who’s going to Time Square to see the ball drop? Of course, you want to be cute, but you’ll also want to be comfortable since you’ll be standing up and walking around for a while.

Outfit number two would be great for you.

nye blog 2

Light up the night with this silver sequin short dress, but stay on trend by adding a black PU leather jacket and knee high boots. Top it off with some dark lipstick if you’re feeling really spunky.

“Oh, but i need to be a more sophisticated” If you feel that way outfit number three will do the trick.

nye blog 3

Get on that off-shoulder black  jumpsuit and maroon coat. You can’t be on trend with black and white without adding a pop of color right? Unless you’re a minimalist, then it’s okay. For a pop of color pair the outfit with these embroidered sandals and finish it up with red gloss!

nye blog 4

If you’re spending the holiday on a fancy date you should be lavish with a bit of glamor.

Pull it off with the velvet and fur trend (faux of course, we love our furry friends!). This is a sequin dress paired with velvet boots with a nice coat. Perfect the look with some smokey eyes and silver toned jewelry. Get those head turners at the restaurant with your boo.

End the year on trend and bring in the New Year on the same note. Looking for your last minute outfits, send a styling request on Fashom App.

We speak through what we wear

on December 26, 2017

Clothes are not some pieces of material you cover your body with, it’s a complete language. You can say many things through what you are wearing. You can also tell too much about your personality, culture, religion, and even your profession through what you are wearing.

Nada is one of those people who cares about her style of dressing and about the message that she wants to send. She works as a financial advisor at a well-known firm in Connecticut. She told us that she loves the business casual style, she also loves shoes and long boots.

Fashom (92 of 134).jpg

In the photoshoot, she appeared with a maroon dress, long black boots, and a black turban. Her style represents her profession as you can tell from the first look at her that she works in a bank or a job that is related to numbers. You can see that she cares about the small details through her photos.

Fashom (70 of 134).jpg

We speak the language of fashion and we can help you in understande this language and teach how to speak through your style.

If you haven’t tried it already, Fashom offers personally styled outfits that represent you.
