We all can learn something from this mother-daughter duo about body positivity

on August 16, 2017

As the weather heats up, everyone is ready to cool off at a pool or a beach in their favorite swimwear. For many girls and women shopping for a swimwear can be a daunting task. Young mom, Brittney Johnson and her daughter turned swimsuit shopping into a body positive lesson for us all.

body-shaming.jpg

Full post

“And then I snapped this one. See that sweet baby girl in the corner? With half a dress on and one of the bikini tops, I had picked out? I stopped for a second to see what she would say and when she turned to the mirror, she said “Wow I just love cheetah print! I think I look beautiful! Do you think I look beautiful too?!”..when it hit me that she only says what she hears. What she sees. I tell her that she is beautiful every single day. She is kind walking through the mall because I tell her she is kind everywhere else. She is polite at the order counter because she hears me when I’m polite to strangers everywhere. She gives compliments to people she doesn’t know because she loves how it feels when she hears them… And when we are in a dressing room, with swimsuits of all God forsaken things, there is a split moment when I have the power to say “wow I have really gotten fat this year” OR “wow I love this coral color on me!” And those are the words burned into my daughter’s brain.

When it comes to manners, be an example.

When it comes to kindness, be an example.

And when it comes to body image, be an example. I am not a size zero. I never will be. I have big thighs and a huge rump and for some reason the middle of my body gets more tan than the rest? But this body made a whole other body. I am strong. I am able. And I am happy. I don’t have to be beautiful like you, because I am beautiful like me. And as my daughter gets older, and she faces judgement and criticism, I will always remind her that the girls who look the prettiest in a two piece, or a body suit, or a freaking Snuggie, are the ones who are happy. Because that’s ALL that matters. And I want her to look at herself every single day and say “Oh wow! I think I look beautiful!” because EVERY girl deserves to feel that.”

What an amazing message from such a young girl. Let’s all encourage our daughters to be respectful & love their bodies.

How I Organize my Closet

on August 11, 2017

Hello, Fashom gals and gents, I know organizing your closet can be one of the biggest hassles, so I’ve curated a list of tips on how I personally organize my closet. I hope this helps you all!

One. Matching Hangers

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:EL_17_100-elfa-Decor-Birch_Details_R.jpg

Buying matching hangers for your closet is the first step you should take when wanting to truly organize your closet. I say this for many reasons, but the main one is that matching hangers is aesthetically pleasing, which usually leads to you wanting the rest of your closet to look neat and pleasing.

Two. Color Coordinate

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:201503-omag-closet-949x534.jpg

A quick way to make your closet feel like it’s organized is to color code your closet. Color coding is not only visually pleasing to the eye, but it will also make it 10x easier to find the clothes that you’re looking for.

Three. Tell your Shoes to Smile

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:dbcb48197d5344413e307458122d5e79.jpg

One of my favorite organization tips is the way I store my shoes. An easy way to see each pair of shoes that you own is to take a picture of the shoes and then tape the picture on to the outside of the shoe’s box. I use this trick for two reasons: first, by keeping your shoes in the box it ensures that your shoes will stay in good quality and second, you won’t have to continuously mess up your closet every time you’re searching for the perfect pair of shoes that will compliment your outfit.

Four. Hook em’

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Shower-Curtain-Hooks-to-Hang-Accessories.jpg

You can never have too many hooks in your closet. Hooks can be used for various things such as: to keep track of your accessories and ensure they stay in good shape, to organize your handbags, backpacks, etc. and keep them off of the ground or to even hang a coat quickly in your closet.

Five. Group & Section

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-07-17 at 11.19.47 PM.png

I’ve saved this tip for last because it’s the most important tip of them all. Grouping and sectioning your clothing by type is ultimately the best way to organize your closet. Having your wardrobe sorted will allow you to know exactly “what you own” and will cut searching for an outfit to put together in half.

Male Body Image Is An Issue Too

on August 8, 2017

For years there have been hundreds, even thousands of campaigns used to promote a positive body image for women in the entertainment and fashion industries. Here at Fashom, we too have worked hard to introduce a positive self-image to women around the world who might not have had the tools to manifest one for themselves.

Ashley Graham via stylishcurves.com

Companies in beauty, fashion, and entertainment have taken tremendous strides in the past decade on dismantling the “ideal woman” image. Still lingering, however, is one outdated misconception about body image: Men don’t care about it. In 1965, sure, it makes sense for there to be an absence of campaigns about men loving themselves, but it’s 2017 and America is not in the middle of the Vietnam War. It is a time in history where the mindset of men is well past starting a family and providing for it in some grimy, ‘manly’ nine-to-five.

Our question is: when will the standard change? Where is the Dove beauty patch experiment for men? Perhaps this is a question company should be asking themselves. Every day, men all over the world battle the ideal male prototype that stands 6’2” with a chiseled stomach and ridiculous flowing hair. They may not be as outspoken about it as those spearheading women’s body positive campaigns, but that’s because men have been programmed not to talk about these issues and to “suck it up”.

Although plus-sized men may not deal with every issue that plus-sized women must fight through, they still share issues on their own. Bigger men find it harder to build up a wardrobe, have to grow up dealing with ‘fat jokes’ and belittlement because of their weight. But as a man, talking about your own insecurities openly is un-masculine or a sign of weakness – issues that a woman doesn’t have to deal with.

While defending the male body image is not a heavily publicized movement, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t people or organizations out there looking to shed more light on the issue. Take into consideration sites like goodmenproject.com, naafaonline.com, chubstr.com, and notoriouslydapper.com just to name a few.

Media outlets like Chubstr and Good Men Project are examples that we would like to see a lot more of at Fashom. Women aren’t the only ones struggling with body image and there is enough research to prove it.

If you liked this post or have a strong opinion on this issue let us know in the comments and on social media!

Back to School Looks

on August 6, 2017

The 2017-18 academic year is approaching and what better reason (or maybe an excuse ha-ha) to spend money and fill up your closet with new looks! I understand that putting together the perfect outfit can be one of the most daunting and annoying things, so I took the liberty to list four outfits that will make getting dressed easy, fun and leave you turning heads.

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-08-04 at 2.41.16 PM.png

One. Boyfriend jeans are the ultimate go to pants. They’re tight enough yet loose enough to flatter anyone’s shape and they’re also comfy. That’s right, jeans that actually comfortable! Pair your denim bad boys with a simple top, sneakers and bold accents for the perfect first-day ensemble.

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-08-04 at 2.28.31 PM.png

Two. You can never go wrong with a vintage t-shirt and denim shorts. Keep it appropriate and choose a pair of shorts that aren’t too short, but flatter your shape. Slightly tuck your shirt into the front of your shorts for a more fitted look, grab a pair of sneakers and your classroom ready!

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-08-04 at 2.34.08 PM.png

Three. Make a classroom statement and throw on an oversized sweater, but purposely forget those pants of yours. This look is casual, yet chic and the ultimate mix between summer and fall. Grab a pair of comfy shoes and jazz up this look with the perfect accessories and a bold lipstick.

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-08-04 at 2.38.08 PM.png

Four. Ladies, I saved the best look and perhaps the comfiest for last. Leggings and ANY type of shirt have never done anyone wrong. Am I right?! I prefer to pair my leggings with a crop top, white sneakers, and oversized earrings and for a sweet finishing touch; I throw my hair in a messy bun.

I hope one of these outfits’ works out for you and remember any outfit will look 10x cuter if you rock it with confidence. ENJOY your first day back in class!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Office Attire

on August 5, 2017

We all need help ensuring that our clothing colors match and don’t clash, so below Fahsom has provided five tips on how to mix and match perfectly.

One. Use a Color Wheel

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:color-wheel.jpg

The color wheel serves as a visual aid for individuals who need help seeing which colors compliment each other and which do not. When talking about “complimentary” colors, that actually means “opposite.” So, the wheel is quite simple to actually understand – the colors that are on the opposite side of each other are those that compliment each other the best. For Instance, orange and blue are complimentary colors…

Two. Know Your Color Palettes

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Earthtones!!.jpg

Play it safe by mixing and matching colors that are in the same color palette. It’s pretty simple – mix earth tones with Earth tones, masculine tones with masculine tones and so forth. Pictured above is an example of Gretchen Jones, the winner of Project Runway Season 8, mixing and matching Earth tones with one another. Didn’t she do a beautiful job?!

Three. Black & ANY Color

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Unknown.jpegMacintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:0e48bb73bf9064e92d7bc4d4db6373e5.jpg

Wearing all black, in general, is the best solution when you can’t seem to find anything to wear, but for some of us, that’s just a little too boring. Fashom suggests that when you’re in doubt, black out your outfit and add a splash of any color. Black goes with everything, so you’ll never go wrong.

Four. Find & Follow a Scheme

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:Screen Shot 2017-07-21 at 3.47.14 PM.png

By following a color scheme, I mean find a piece of clothing, accessory or pair of shoes that you want to wear for the day and then base the rest of your wardrobe off that one color scheme. For instance, If you have a pair of heels you want to wear that day that consist of pink blue white and black, then choose an outfit with colors that will compliment your heels color scheme.

Five. Trust Yourself

Macintosh HD:Users:dareanrhodes:Desktop:landscape-1489696177-lead-runway-trends.jpg

Any outfit is going to look its best when you feel your best and have compliment confidence in the look. If an outfit you throw on doesn’t match, but you look in the mirror and still look FIRE, then trust your gut instinct and wear it. Pictured above is a range of Fall 2017 trends from major designers such as Marc Jobs, Valentino, and Lacoste.

The Five Beach Necessities

on August 4, 2017

Hello Fashom ladies, I’m back with another round of beach essentials that everyone needs while chillin’ seaside. Deciding on the items that one will need at the beach can be daunting, so I’ve compiled a list of a few things will make anyone’s leisure time on the shore more desirable. The summer days only seem to be getting hotter and hotter and while that lasts, I thought everyone would enjoy a few easy breezy tips.

(1) Tote Bag

The tote bag is the number one essential because who wants to drag everything they brought with them to the beach separately?! Purchase a cute oversized woven bag that you easily pair with any beach look.

(2) Sunscreen

Make sure you always have a bottle of sunscreen with you at the beach. Spending consecutive hours in the sun can lead to damaging your beautiful skin. I prefer to use Neutrogena’s sunscreen; it has a weightless texture when applied to the skin, provides great coverage for a lengthy amount of time and is waterproof.

(3) Large Beach Towel

Beach, you better bring a towel while you’re enjoying yourself on the seaside. An oversized beach towel is always a must and can be extremely versatile. I use my towel to keep my bum bum safe from the hot sand, wrap up in it when I want to take a nap in the sun and most importantly to dry off before I call it a day at the beach.

(4) Swimsuit Cover-up

Everyone’s body after a certain amount of time in the heat needs a break. A swimsuit cover-up will allow you to get a break from the sun, but also allow you to continue to feel the breeze of the ocean. I love cover-ups that are mid-length and flowy.

(5) Beach Hat

There are many reasons why I ALWAYS bring a hat to the beach with me. First,

I love to wear my hair down by the shore and wearing a hat ensures that my hair remains tame. Second, hats keep those painful sun rays out of my eyes. And, third adding a cute hat can be just what my outfit or anyone’s outfit needed to look poppin’!

I hope you guys enjoyed these FIVE beachin’ tips!

The Trends of Summer 2017

on July 27, 2017

Hello again my lovely readers, I’m back to share with you guys some of the more prominent trends that have made an impression in the fashion world.

Trends are ever-changing, so it’s my job to make sure my followers are always kept up to date. These three looks I’ve listed below have come and gone many times, but are finally here to stay and did not come to play!

The “Glowy Dewy Makeup” Look

A bronzed makeup look to create a glowing and dewy skin complexion will always be a winner during the summer time.

Even better, this is an easy look. Choose a bronzer, highlighter or even eye shadow that’s nude with a bit of shimmer. Now apply the shimmer to your cheekbones, eyelids and upper lip area and watch yourself transform into a sun-kissed goddess.

The Beret

Between Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and the latest iconic duo Simi and Haze, the beret has officially made a comeback.

This Parisian, but chic look seems to be the accessory that everyone is choosing. The beret will top off anyone’s outfit and give their style the finished look one envisioned.

The Translucent Sunny’s

Indie vintage sunglasses are BACK and if you don’t believe me, then ask Gigi Hadid.

The internationally known model has collaborated with Vogue eyewear and has exclusively designed a line of trendy glasses for Vogue. Hadid states that she based the style and shape of her newest line off of “stunning retro-chic shapes colors, luminous colors and essential details – all in the eclectic vibes of the 90s.”

Have a great summer being trendy and cute, Fashom gals!

Stop Calling Body Positivity “Brave”

on July 13, 2017

The Misconception of Body Positivity

A body positive Instagrammer, Kenzie Brenna, expressed a divergent take on body positivity and the real definition of bravery in her recent post. Society views photos of plus-size women or women with more cellulite or stretch makes as very brave. However, Brenna believes this is not bravery.

To Brenna, bravery needs an act of courage. Courage is something you do out of strength when the odds are all against you. So what is a good example of this? Brenna uses firefighters as a prime act of bravery. They risk their own lives to save civilians. Models are not labeled brave, athletes in sports bras or swimsuits are not labeled brave, but models with “flaws” are labeled brave.

“I just exist”, states Brenna.

As a society, we should accept our insecurities and be better at loving ourselves, and just exist. Not every model who shows his/her flaws is actually “brave”.

Brenna is one of many people out there who feel this way about “bravery”. Here, at Fashom, we emphasize the same qualities that Brenna is preaching. We appreciate our users for existing and presenting themselves just the way they are. It’s that simple.

Thank you, Brenna, for your amazing words!
